21 Healthy Habits Tip #7: Eat Your Greens! (smoothie recipe included)

You’ve probably heard that eating veggies is a great way to be healthy… but many people don’t eat enough veggies every day. Here’s a super simple trick to make sure that you get your veggies in, and can still enjoy your favorite foods in 2017:

Health Tip #7: Eat Your Greens (smoothies count!)

Aim to get at least 5 servings of veggies every single day (and no - french fries don’t count towards your veggie servings!). 1 serving is equal to one cup, which is about the size of what you can hold in one hand. So you can take a handful of lettuce, or a handful of green beans, or a handful of brussel sprouts … you get the picture :)

When you focus on adding in more healthy foods to your diet, the less healthy stuff tends to just fade away, without you feeling deprived. A good way to think of this trick, is to tell yourself that you can indulge in that (pizza/ cupcake / whatever your craving)... AFTER you eat all 5 of your veggie servings. This does a couple of cool things:

  • you’ll feel more full so you’ll likely eat less of your indulgence, or you might not even want it anymore
  • eating veggies means that you’re eating more fiber. Fiber helps balance your blood sugar so it reduces cravings AND also reduces the impact that sugar has on your system. Which translates to less energy crashes and less of the indulgence being stored as fat! Bonus!!!
  • green veggies are the best choice since they generally have the least calories, and they’re packed full of antioxidants that help to alkalize your body PH. This helps to get rid of cravings, reduce fat storage, and get your body back into balance (see a theme here? Veggies really are THAT good for you!)

Here’s a simple 2-minute smoothie recipe that packs in 3 full servings of green veggies - and it tastes delicious!

      Banana Dream Smoothie

      • 1 cup milk of your choice (try unsweetened vanilla almond milk!)
      • 3 handfuls of baby spinach
      • 1 banana
      • 1 tsp vanilla
      • 1 TBSP cocoa powder
      • 1 TBSP of your favorite nut butter
      • small handful of ice cubes

Blend all ingredients together until smooth. You can add more or less ice and milk to achieve your favorite consistency. Delish!!

So try this today! Eat at least 5 veggies (aim for mostly green veggies if possible), and notice how you feel. Do you have less cravings? More energy? You can do this every day in 2017!!
